Postgraduate Work, Internships and Residences Needed for Career  The Orthopedic Residency Training Program at LSUMC is a four year program. This program allows experience in outpatient and inpatient care. Each resident has to perform each procedure with a staff supervisor demonstrating they know key steps in detecting injury and doing surgery. The resident is responsible for the patients themselves while attending physicians act as consultants. A basic science course is taught to them while in residency, which is orthopedic pathology and anatomy and development of individual projects. This course is when the resident learns how to use the surgical tools correctly with lab experience and extends into microsurgical techniques. Each resident has to complete a laboratory project by the end of the third year and this proves whether or not he or she is capable enough to work on their own.
