Physical Characteristics

Size:
  * Length: 5 to 7 Meters

  * Weight: Can weigh up to 1500 pounds
Coloration/Skin: Dark green to brownish color
Special Adaptations of Sense Organs:
* Has a third transparent eyelid, which closes while diving to keep water out of its eyes without sacrificing it vision.

Habitat

Diet: Antelope buffalo, young hippos, large cats, fish- larger part of diet.
Habitat Description: Lakes, rivers, freshwater, swamps, brackish water.
Range: Can be found across almost all of Africa.

Reproduction

Courtship Behavior: -
Mating Season: November through the end of December
Gestation Period: 3 to 5 months
Litter size: 40 to 60 eggs in nest

Age when Young are Independent: Age three when Independent, hatchlings remain close to mother for up to two years after hatching.

Behavior

Food Gathering Behavior: The Nile Crocodile uses its powerful tails to knock larger prey into water were the crocodile has the advantage.

Social and Territorial Behavior: Groups of Nile Crocodile help each other scavenge food.
Other Behavior: Nile crocodiles have a social hierarchy, the larger male crocodiles are dominate.

Endangered Status


Inhabited Areas

The Nile crocodile is not considered seriously endangered although in some areas it is badly depleted and in danger of being extirpated from some countries.
