One of the advantages of online information is that authors can keep it updated with little effort.  As consumers of information it is sometimes important to consider how current the information is.

If we are working on an online Bible, the date of the last update is not too important.  If we are reading population data for the state of Illinois, this date is important.

Two important questions to consider are:

  1. When was the page last updated?
  2. What is the date of the source of information found in text, graphs, maps and charts?

To see examples and learn more follow the above links.

When was the page last updated?

1.  Many of the programs that help authors write web pages places a "time stamp" every time an author opens a page and changes it.  Often dates are printed in small font at the bottom of a page. To find when this page was last updated, click here.

2.  If the date is not given it is possible to use your Netscape Browser to find the date

On the Netscape Menu Bar Go to View > Page Info
Try doing that with this page

3.  Another strategy that can be used to find recent WWW publications is to us a search engine which allows you to limit "hits" to a certain range of dates

For example, lets check the topic "maps of africa" and look at 2 ranges of dates  1995-1996 and 1999-2000

Copy and past the phrase "map of Africa" into the AltaVista Advanced Search Engine

  • first type 31/1/99 - 31/1/00 and look at the "hits"
  • then change the range to 31/1/95  -  31/196 and compare the hits
  • answer

What is the date of the source of information found in text, graphs, maps and charts?

A web page may have been updated yesterday with information that was gathered many years ago.  The same is true in books.  Books often contain citations that tell the source(age) of the information.

On the WWW it is up to the author to state when information was obtained.  A careful reader will find it.

Compare these two sites and find the references to years from which information is gathered
