How will District 230 implement remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic?
A remote learning day is defined by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) as an educational program designed to provide continuation of learning for students under conditions that prohibit the learner and instructor from being in the same physical space. District 230 has amended its existing eLearning Day plan to accommodate the guidelines established by ISBE for remote learning during the Coronavirus Pandemic. Friday, April 3 will be the first Staff Professional Development day using the new schedule. Monday, April 6 will be the first A/B schedule day for students as outlined below. This plan will be in effect until onsite instruction is reinstated by the Governor. At the Governor's press conference on March 31, he extended the "Stay at Home" order through April 30.

How does it work?
Assignments will be posted by teachers in Skyward Message Center by 9 a.m.. Based on ISBE guidance students should not engage in remote learning for more than 3 hours a day, therefore assignments/activities cannot exceed more than 50 minutes per class, including instructional time.
Students must log into Skyward by 10 a.m. to fill out a Google attendance form. Students that log into Skyward and fill out the Google attendance form will be marked present. Students will check assignments in the Message Center and begin to work on assignments for the day. Deadlines for assignments will be determined by teachers and communicated with students. Students that do not check-in will be marked as “unaccounted for.” In the event that students could not get Internet access, they will be expected to complete the eLearning Day assignments within two days for all of their classes. Parents and students will be contacted via email, phone call, and/or text message after 11am if the student has been marked “unaccounted for.”
Staff members will be working throughout the day with dedicated time from 10-11:30 a.m. to be online to answer student questions about assignments.
All emails from students received by 3 p.m. will be responded to that day by teachers.

How Will Classes Meet?
Class periods will be split on an A/B schedule so that only up to four periods meet per day. Twenty-minute class periods will be allocated to allow teachers to meet virtually with students to review assignments and provide direct instruction. This is at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Teachers will communicate virtual meeting details prior to the meeting.

Grading
The ISBE recommendation states that “grading should focus on the continuation of learning and prioritize the connectedness and care for students and staff. All students should have the opportunity to redo, makeup, or try again to complete, show progress, or attempt to complete work assigned prior to the remote learning period in that time frame.” Grades as of March 13 (our last onsite day of instruction) are the baseline for students’ grades. At the end of the semester, a student's overall grade in the class cannot be lower than the March 13 grade, however all students have the potential to raise their grade. All assignments turned in on or before March 13 will be graded and entered into Skyward by by April 9, 2020 or the date provided by the respective Division Chairperson. In the event eLearning extends through the end of the current school year, Final Course Grades will range from A+ to D- and Incomplete (there will be no F’s assigned). If a student is not engaged in learning through the end of the school year, an Incomplete Grade may be issued, regardless of the March 13 grade. The school will contact those students and families who are not participating in the remote learning and work to re-engage the student.

Friday Professional Support and Student Support
Fridays will be dedicated to professional support and student support. The morning will be dedicated to professional development, PLC meetings and curriculum to support our new working/learning environment. The afternoons will be dedicated to supporting students. An SEL Task Force is currently working on the specifics of how that support will be delivered.
-
Attendance
A new code X-NC (exempt no check-in) will be added to the grade book so teachers will know and be able to determine which students have not checked in. This code will assist teachers in determining which students need additional contact to engage them in learning.

Final Exams
Final Exams will be canceled for Spring Semester 2020.

Spring SAT Canceled
The April 14 State SAT has been canceled for all Illinois high schools. Additionally, College Board has also canceled all May National tests. This year's early graduates and those needing an SAT score for graduation requirements will have this requirement waived for the current school year. The Illinois State Board of Education is reviewing opportunities for a State SAT in the Fall of 2020, but has not made a final determination. District 230 will also review any possibilities. We realize this may be unsettling for our juniors, however, know that all juniors across the nation are facing the same dilemma and all post-secondary institutions will need to make accommodations to account for this reality. District 230 will keep our students and families informed as more information is provided by both ISBE and College Board.
-
Advanced Placement Testing
College Board has indicated that they are adjusting the tests but details will not be released until April 3. Once we know exactly what the test schedule will look like, what content will be covered, what technology will be needed, and what internal processes may be necessary we will message information out to all of our AP students and parents. We anticipate that a formal message will be sent out Monday, April 6.
-
Transition Plan
As is required by ISBE, a transition plan for when we return to onsite learning will be developed and will include the process for addressing incomplete grades.
-
Continued Collaboration
We will continue to collaborate with our Associations to clarify procedural items as we implement this remote learning plan. We are grateful for the ongoing flexibility, compassion, and dedication of our staff as we navigate these uncertain times.
-
Technology Support
Technical support will be available from school and district technology staff by accessing the Help Desk through email at help@d230.org. When an email is submitted a work ticket is created and assigned to technology staff who will be working throughout the day to address technology concerns.
