The 93 members of Carl Sandburg High School’s Med Club have been hard at work this school year making an impact in three key areas. Book Club, CS Med Central, and HOSA competition. Each initiative allows students to engage with the medical field in unique and meaningful ways.

Book Club takes students beyond the classroom, immersing them in medical literature that deepens their understanding of healthcare. Currently, under the leadership of junior Sam Lee, members are reading When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi -  a memoir by a young neurosurgeon faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis who attempts to answer the question 'What makes a life worth living?'

In addition to Book Club, members contribute to CS Med Central, the club’s research publication. Each semester, the publication focuses on a unique theme to deepen understanding of the medical field. First semester’s issue. The Future of Healthcare: Innovations and Advancements, highlights innovations and advancements in medicine. Editor and junior Hannah George served as editor of the publication. A few of the articles include Digital Mental Health Platforms, Automated Insulin Delivery Systems, and The Impact of AI on Cancer Detection.

Beyond research and literature, Med Club members put their skills to the test in the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) competition. Recently 27 students qualified for state competition in 30 different events. In March, they will travel to Springfield to compete in hands-on events against top students from across the state.

Med Club sponsor Laura Drzonek said, “I couldn’t be prouder of what these students have accomplished. Their dedication, passion, and drive continue to impress and inspire!”
