I am #D230Proud that our students and staff put great effort into honoring the brave individuals who serve our country in the military. Veterans Luncheons have a long tradition in District 230 as we recognize the commitment and sacrifice that service members make in order to protect our freedoms.

Today, we are releasing episode 2 of the #D230Proud Video Series: Say Something. In this episode, Sandburg Special Education Director Kristyn Koss, Stagg Head Dean Mary Pat Carr, and Andrew Associate Principal Brian Nolan share useful information and tips for parents regarding school safety. I am grateful for the dedication of our school staff to providing prevention education, building strong relationships, and collaborating with community partners to ensure our schools are safe for learning.

At the School Board meeting last night, we had the opportunity to honor some of the excellent work our teachers do each day. It was a pleasure to celebrate the accomplishments of two Stagg High School teachers - Special Olympics Region E Coach of the Year Abby Degliomini and Illinois Latin Teacher of the Year Anna Reiff. Their passion for their students and for continuously seeking ways to grow as educators are to be commended!

As a high school educator for 35 years and a father of three, I know firsthand the challenges parents and guardians can face in raising teenagers. I also know it is empowering to have access to information and practical tips from experts and those who have faced these same challenges while raising and educating teens.

Connecting with the world around us
One of the many reasons I am #D230Proud is the way our staff finds unique ways to connect students with the world around us. The purpose of those connections may vary - to show appreciation for individuals who sacrifice to protect us all, or to connect the concepts they learn in class to real world events, or to help students find their voice and share their experiences and for us to learn from them. In the end, the experiences broaden students' perspectives and help them see how they fit in this world. Below are three great examples from our schools.

What an amazing start to the 2019-20 school year! The energy began with New Teacher Orientation, continued through Institute Days, and is certainly going strong on students' first days of school!

This week we celebrate all staff in our schools who make a difference. In each of our roles, we impact the stories of our students and colleagues. I am grateful to call each of you a colleague.

I was absolutely floored by the amazing talent of the Symphonic Bands from each of our high schools during the District 230 Band Showcase held at Wentz Hall on the North Central College campus Wednesday night.
