At Consolidated High School District 230, students at Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew High Schools are required to perform 25 hours of service learning as part of their graduation requirements. For many students, volunteering is something they choose to do, regardless of whether it is a requirement or not. In fact, since July 1, District 230’s 7500 students have logged more than 50,200 hours of service learning at more than 225 sites across the district. Service projects benefit the community, needy individuals, groups in the community and/or school based parent groups. 

This holiday season, students have been out in their communities volunteering their time and talents. Below are just a few examples of their service learning experiences. 

Andrew High School student Delaney Dillon and her sister Kathleen Dillon created and built a wood tree and characters for the annual Tinley Park Holiday Market, which is on display at the Oak Park Avenue Metra Station. The project took 30 hours to complete and each received 15 hours of service.  

More than one dozen Sandburg and Andrew High School students helped with Santa Comes to Town for the Village of Orland Hills last week. They helped with crowd control as Santa landed in a helicopter, and they served hot chocolate for attendees.

Four members of the Sandburg High School Symphony Orchestra volunteered at the Veterans' Home at Manteno spreading a bit of musical joy.

Stagg High School National Honor Society members donated essentials to the Ronald McDonald House.
