Stagg faculty to showcase math and tech at statewide conference
District 230 teachers at Stagg High School will present their proactive approach to introducing students to careers in the trades, along with Math in Construction training, both in an effort to help them prepare for a career path at the 93rd Annual Illinois Association for Career and Technical Education Conference and Annual Meeting on February 16-17, 2023 in Bloomington-Normal.
Math in Construction teachers John Daniels and Eric Malone, along with Carpenter Training Center Assistant Coordinator Kina McAfee, will present a workshop entitled, The Marriage of Math and Technology and Engineering Education (formerly Applied Technology) to Help Students Become Career-Oriented While Helping the Trades.
The trio will share labor data and discuss a proactive approach to address recent unsettling labor statistics. The presentation brings attention to the fact that two-thirds of the workforce in the United States has a high school education or less. How do educators navigate the growing percentage of students who go to college and end up dropping out before ever receiving a degree? As of 2022, over 30% of students went to college and ended up dropping out. Another alarming statistic is that 4 million skilled laborers are needed to replace the 8+ million workers lost during the pandemic and the retirement of the Baby Boomers.
